INTERVIEW W JUSTIN KASE + EXCLUSIVE TRACK

I have to give my respects to the long haired, mysterious disk jockey under the name Justin Kase, whose tastes reflect all that is good in this current dance era. It was during one of Kase's sets that I first heard Fake Blood's "Mars" come to life through club sized subs, along with every other key remix that Discodusters, Missing Toofers and Ohhcrappers were telling you to listen to.

At first I pegged Kase as one of those dj's who would rather be anywhere else than behind the turn tables but after a few more encounters my preconceived notions disappeared as I started to notice subtle hints to Kases personality, like when he would look up during a good part in the song, see the crowd gearing up for the drop and smile when the bass hit it's climax.

Joseph: first off, is there any beef between nn and bisb? haha

Justin: haha, I wouldn't know.

I feel like I didn't quite hit things off when I popped up on stage and asked you to play jfk mix of jesse mccartney (a remix that I will still defend to this day)

Oh, don't take offense to that. I just didn't have it and I'm not really a fan of that tune (laughing) I had forgot that even happened.

You play a lot of shows here in Nashville; you're pretty much the go to dj for any major blogworthy electro star. Who was your favorite artist to work with or just chill with?

I have to go to my default which is jensen sportag. We've both been busy with different things but drinking and brainstorming with those guys lead to a lot of awesome things though the most fun i had with a remix was either the redfecks one or treasure fingers.

I was fortunate enough to meet the sportag crew the other night, their live stuff sounds pretty much studio quality, I love it.

Yeah It's top notch stuff

You and jensen have formed quite the tag team powerhouse. Can you name any other rising stars who are helping Nashville gain a little cred in the club department? besides fan fiction.

(laughing) nice promo

...

Really, i dont know. As bad as it is I don't pay attention to much around here. I've been busy with music at home so i haven't got out like I've wanted to. I saw make up and vanity last year some time early on and still haven't gotten back out to see him.

His stuff was pretty sick, although I'm not too into the whole masked dj bit but that has nothing to do with the music. What have you been listening to lately?

The mask thing is way played but I liked his sergio remix and one of the other tunes on his myspace. As for what ive been listening to...

salem way too much, fever ray's new record which is awesome, I don't know, super mario themes; I refurbed my nes so I've been playing it non stop (laughs).

so good...

Oh, and music go music. Warm in the light is amazing. Or in the shadows rather, I'm good at botching song titles.

For your debut album, what kind of style can I expect? Do you have a release date in mind?

It was set for April. I'm holding off on it though. Maybe this summer. Austin (of sportag) is working on a remix for what was to be the lead single right now.

Good news.

Yea. I want it to be perfect, so who knows. It's not coming out until it's ready.

Have you done any label shopping?

Not for this stuff, no. If and when it's released it will be through midisport.

Hypothetically, if you were to be granted 3 remixers to release your first single with, who would you have rework your tunes?

Well, that's a secret for now. We have someone in mind. I can promise you it's awesome though.

So what blogs do you go to to get new music? Or is everything you need right in the bisb mailbox?

Both really. Aim as well. If you don't check the blogs it's easy to miss new artists.

I've seen you spin a couple times and each time, I always enjoyed the selection/execution of the set. Do you have any demos or anything you can drop for the readers?

Thanks man. well, I have a few mixes on my myspace for d/l so they should check those out.

Is anyone else coming to town that you know of besides felix (and deadmau5 who I really haven't listened to)?

There's talk of some big names, but I don't like to say until things are confirmed.

Do you think artists are catching on that the dirty south likes to dance?

I think people realize the potential in Nashville now. Atlanta has been doing it for a while though. I still think nights like last Friday and the old youth group parties were beyond what I've seen in other cities.

Nashville wants it

Indeed.

As a closing question, whats the hypest show you've played? the dopest/wickedess/nastiest blah blah...

The best was probably playing with Digitalism in Juarez Mexico. It was completely out of control.

Damn i didn't know you played with them how'd you get that?

I did a small tour of Mexico the year before and blew up around the boarder cities. I was fortunate enough to be chosen as the line bars closing dj. The kids are awesome there that club did a lot for that city.

Worst would have to be a 420 party in Hattiesburg

man it was scary

(laughing) what happened?

(laughing) It's not necessarily what happened, just were we were. I played in a barn that was converted into a night club that hosted drag shows.

Whaaaat?

Yea. that's Mississippi for you haha. Oh, and the sound kept going out. it was awesome. The kids were really nice though. Very rave.

Do you have any advice for a beginner dj?

Don't stop. Throw your own events, and try to have fun. Also, don't half ass it and don't do it for the wrong reasons.

Nice. Thanks, I look forward to this summer when we'll hopefully be able to hear what you're working on. good luck tonight, and in the future. The Nashville dance scene is a small spark that will hopefully gain more fuel over the years.

Everything good takes time.

Kase has opened for Digitalism, MSTRKRFT, L.A. Riots, Felix Cartal, and Treasure Fingers. He's up for "Best DJ" and "Scenester of the Year" through Nashville Nightlife. He plays a free show every friday night at 12th and Porter and will be opening for Cartal again March 13th.

After the interview, Justin Kase hooked me up with his latest edit of a Pryda song. The track is epic to say the least; it blends Cartal influenced punchy banger style with Kase's love for disco synth. Enjoy this Nashville Nights Exclusive:

More remixes can be heard on Justin Kase's myspace, including a brand new Sportag Remix which will be released Mar. 3rd on Midisport.

TIGA

Tiga was never an instant hit for me. I liked his previous work well enough, but was always confused as to how he was raised up to digitalism/justice/smd status. Maybe If I wrote songs about sexy lightning striking twice, I'd be famous too. Mind Dimension was ok...it was pretty minimalistic which is not my favorite style. I did however often catch myself singing, "everytime I look into your eyes I see the future". I'm guessing he's just quirky and I should stop reading into his music too much via late night study groups where we analyze the lyrics of "shoes".

* Tiga - Shoes (Radio)
* Tiga - Love Don't Dance Here Anymore (off Ciao!) [REMOVED]

ok...shoes is real good. maybe the hype is deserved...maybe

PRODIGY

I have a lot of new music for you, but it seems that boxstr wants to keep it all to itself. I'm trying this whole ysi + mediafire combo that a lot of other blogs are using. If hypem recognizes this post then, I might do away with straight mp3's altogether.

This track is the essence of prodigy, dirty fast paced grit with some 90s synths somewhere in there.

METRONOMY + POST WAR YEARS

Ya that break lasted real long. I'm back, but its for good reason. My latest inbox gave way to two of my favorite rising stars.

Metronomy was my pick for best album last year so It's fun to see them get remixed a bunch. This latest mix seems to be more appropriate to the nature of Metronomy's style (you can't raveify metronomy).

Metronomy - Radio Ladio (micachu remix)

Post War Years was one of the first artists that I wrote about when I started NN. I'm glad to seen them all growns up and continuing to make great music. Last I heard they were touring with White Lies but that was a while ago. Check this one out, its a really great single. Previous PWY coverage.

WE HAVE TO COVER THIS ALL WITH PLASTIC / 2 NEW GBEAR TRACKS

People who love grizzly bear LOVE grizzly bear. Take for instance my friend who was intricately describing the similarities between the beateles and gbear the other day. In his description, both bands have two unique writers, one who brings the pop and one who brings the weird. Whether you agree with that or not, Grizzly Bear have created a sound that is different from most of the music that falls under the label of indie rock.

Grizzly Bear - Cheerleader (live)

The subtle sound of crickets chirping in the background paired with the crackling noises of leaves and murmured voices brings these recordings to life, making you feel like you're there sitting in the grass under the stars. If you close your eyes you can almost smell the second hand weed smoke hovering over whatever imaginary field you're in.

JUNIOR BOYS: BEGONE DULL CARE REVIEW

Before I get going know that the above image was compiled from various pictures from the Junior Boys website and should not be considered as the BDC album cover.

2009 is slowly moving away from the banger style and heading towards breathy simplistic styles. This is not to say that I will stop looking for heavy tracks its just that artists like Ted and Francis are gaining popularity alongside Breakbot and Classixx who's remixes are always uniquely different with more emphasis on the groove/melody rather than pounding bass.

Junior Boys - Bits & Pieces

The new Junior Boys album is no exception. When listening to it I was surprised to find that each track preceded the last in its ability get me humming along to its simple chilled out melodies. Right when I thought I had the track figured out a beat dropped in, adding a new dynamic and keeping things fresh and fun.

Junior Boys - Dull To Pause

Think of everything you love about a slow Phoenix song or a slightly dancier version of Talkie Walkie and you have the Junior Boys' Begone Dull Care. Look for the album when it drops April 7th, I can already tell I'm this is going to be another one of Domino's instant classics.

DOA

Some people are going around saying silly things like electro is dead and what not. Either way I'm going to end up posting whatever sounds good. The style may be changing but people will always want to dance and it helps when you have a dirty little bass groove to make you want to move. Dead or alive, these tracks, which I picked up from various blogs that I love have kept me in my headphones all night.

If your having trouble sleeping I suggest you put this on your ipod, close your eyes, take deep breaths and know...that rave is king. (This track sounds nothing like rave is king).

Ted & Francis - Allways

Are you sick of Empire of the Sun remixes yet? Are you sick of running for the thrill of it? Me too...but I always have a place in my heart for Danger who have churned out this lovely rework that makes me want to play Starcraft real bad.

Empire of the Sun - Walking on a Dream (Danger Remix)

I don't really know much about Datarock other than the fact that they were featured on an Ipod ad which I've never seen. I trust the apple publicity crew to pick nice fresh songs, so I assume Datarock is a nice fresh band. This song is pretty great.

Datarock - Give It Up

Lifelike is quite the big name producer of his field and for good reason. I have yet to hear one of his remixes that I didn't like

The Neon Judgement - Miss Brown (Lifelike Remix)

This next track sounds a lot like something you'd hear in a digitalism set. Its got a pretty simple equation of bass groove + vocal cuts = fun. I picked this one up at IHEARTCOMIX who have a whole page of goodies you need to check out.

Beni - My Love Sees You (Beni's Dub)

NEVER THOUGHT I'D SEE THE DAY

I have been dangerously juggling the ratio of songs between novelty comedic music, chilled out breathy pop and bangers lately. When I heard this one it just proved how right The Lonely Island crew are about everything. They ARE on a boat. And you need to know this.

The Lonely Island - I'm On A Boat ft. T-Pain

Their full album "Icredibad" comes out this Tue. - can't wait.

WHAT UP Y'ALL

The twelves will always be under my radar. When I saw this little collaboration on toomanysebastians I had to snatch it. The song is a rip from a live set of theirs but despite the quality its a fun blippy twelves rework that will tide you over for a bit.

Daft Punk - Aerodynamic (The Twelves Remix)

HEARTSREVOLUTION seem to be the posterchild of the electrotrash generation and spank rock is the posterchild of the subpophiphop movement so when they come together they make a dreamy synthy anthem that is just full of emotional tension and important feelings.

HEARTSREVOLUTION - Ultraviolence (Ft. Spank Rock)

Royksopp is on everyones mind lately and after Breakbot re-invented metronomy, he is quite the hot topic as well. Enjoy this continuation of summery fun songs that have been popping up on this blog lately:

Royksopp - Happy Up Here (Breakbot Remix)

Mustard Pimp dropped me a few tracks a while back and I think this one is my favorite. I can't help but laugh at its super manly deep German nature. Regardless of what you think of this song, it WILL get you moving.

Mo Do - Ein, Zwei, Polizei (Mustard Pimp Remix)

The Dirty Disco Youth rework of the new Crookers single is better than the original in my opinion. Theres an excellent blend of blobby/cutting synth noises to go with a nice sweaty aerobics workout beat.

SOUNDS AND VISION

Nashville is finally shaking off the snow and warming up. Its about time we had some nice airy nu disco jams to accompany the nice weather. Above is the first video single from Casio Kids. Below is the equally amazing tune.

Casio Kids - Fot I Hose

Dan Black's music is similar to friendly fires (the opening bass riff from "Alone" sounds almost exactly like "On Board") but don't write Mr. Black off as a copy cat just yet. I can't say that I have the mp3 to go along with the amazing video above but the below mp3 sports Dan's ability to switch the styles up.

First off we have the final version of the Hot Chip/D.I.M collaboration of which I posted a teaser for a while back:

FIGURE

Figure has pursued his career with unbashful and relentless self promotion in such a way that I have to stand back and applaud. His latest opus goes by the name of the Walrus Shuffle and I can not for the life of me stop listening to it's deep bass pounding glory.

FIGURE's remixes and originals can be seen littered throughout the vast regions of the hype machine but this one sets itself apart from the others. Although I'm not usually partial to bass dependent anthems this one, like the Valerna track, reinvents itself a couple times (with a surprise sax solo waiting for you in the middle).

AWAY FROM THE SEA REVIEW

The Yuksek debut album is similar to The Chemical Brother's: We Own The Night (both in sound and execution). Both albums pull help from producers and artists in their field and they both have a couple songs that stand out from the rest.

Yuksek - So Down featuring Chromeo

Away From the Sea is versatile in its delivery of club bangers (Tonight, I Like to Play), indie rockers (So Far Away From The Sea, Tonight Reprise) and retro disco stylings (So Down, I Could Never Be A Dancer). The Album makes an excellent soundtrack for meaningful porch summer parties or late night club hopping adventures.

RELAX

Here are a few instant classics; each one breathier, swirlier and synthier than the last. With as much style and class as the Vice City soundtrack, these songs will transport you to a beach somewhere, watching the sunset as silhouetted roller skaters (circa 1987) in short shorts go skating off in the distance.

Yuksek - Freak O Rocker

SPIRIT OF APOLLO REVIEW

I get my hands on this release and the breath leaves my lungs. There is so much to take in at once. I have been waiting for this release ever since I heard the Felix Cartal remix of N.A.S.A Music. In order to give this album justice you have to listen to it from beginning to end in one sitting (with headphones on).

There I was, lying in my bed in the dark with my eyes closed while David Byrne crooned around various rappers who I will not pretend to know anything about. The leaked tracks gave way to hype for tracks supported by M.I.A, Santogold, Lykke Li, Karren O and Spank Rock.

N.A.S.A - Whatchadoin? Feat. Spank Rock, M.I.A., Santogold & Nick Zinner

The rest of the album proved to be just as exciting with cameos from Del, Tom Waits and Cool Kids. The end result is something close to Night Ripper but Itunes friendly. The album is total stoner pop and it sounds like Urban Outfitters funded the whole operation yet don't let the catchiness/mass consumer appeal turn you off (if you're that kind of person) this album is well worth buying.

N.A.S.A - Strange Enough Feat. Karen O', Ol' Dirty Bastard & Fatlip
