DatA - Skywriter Review + Track: "So Much In Love"

Welcome to 'Skywriter', DatA's debut full length album. Often when you come down from a leak induced high (composed of an artist you love + obtaining hard to find goods), you meet the crash (several hours later) of realizing that the album is only so-so.

Either I haven't given the Skywriter a proper chance, or I jump too quickly to the next, newest artist. Either way, its not a good sign when you have to remind yourself to go back to a cd.

I would equate the album's lasting ability to Yuksek's debut album.

The singles, "One In a Million" and "Rapture" have been so thoroughly ingrained in my subconscious that I already skip over them when they come up (like Mind Dimension off Ciao!)

A lot of the album's charm is lost in the fact that I had heard half of it before it came out, but new tracks like "So Much in Love", "Nightmare", "Electric Fever" and "Skywriter" especially stand out to make the album worth holding onto.

I will also say that DatA can get some kick ass artwork for their material.

Interview w Junior Boy(s) and Max Tundra

Only positive press has surrounded the latest Junior boys album which is old news by now, due to the early leak (four months early) and the pace that music is thrown at us these days.

After their show at Mercy Lounge, I was able to talk with Matt Didemus (the Junior Boy to the right of the above image) and Ben Jacobs (who recently gained renowned for his spastic electronic style under the name "Max Tundra")

Picture the combination of Jocobs' peppy elegant British accent clashing with Didemus' straightforward almost jaded, deep tone of a voice and you have the following interview:

Eli Smith - Party All Knight

Found this one while shopping around on the IHC pages.

Maybe I'm a sucker for the "Knight" play on words, or just in the mood for mind numbing bass.

Either way check out Eli Smith's release from the So Sweet label which also released a 7 track Le Castlevania sampler which you can find over here

The sound fits right in with harder pounding tracks like Aoki's "Gifted" remix, which I only recently uncovered (due to following Aoki hate trends, I looked over it), but I have to hand it to him, the man can make a solid N.A.S.A mix

Moderat - "Sick With It"

There's a type of person who listens to Modeselektor/Aparat and other styles of 'post industrial artsy electronic house' . From my experiences, they're usually urban white kids who are into underground hip hop rooting from Chicago.

I'm not well acquainted with either artists (although "Happy Birthday" by Modeselektor is one of the better songs I've heard in my lifetime).

Its a big deal that these artists are collaborating because...

well collaborations are always fun.

As I was listening through the album my first thought was that this is going to be another ambient, deep drawn out housy cd (sort of true, but sort of not), I did however find a single on Moderat's debut album called, "Sick with It" that blew my mind.

I was driving when I first heard it; cityscapes and bridges were passing over me while the sun was setting.

I highly suggest that you check this one out, its already made its way to 'best originals of '09' on the nn end of the year list.

IRONIC RAP TIME!!

What a surprise I have for you this morning. New Toxic Avenger, New RAC, new DTTT.

First off, lets just give a round of applause to DW who made some stellar art for the new FamilyForce5 remix album. (making them 1000x more bloggable with retro fo-akira hyper pink/blue/nn look). I guess the label wanted to move away from goober youth group kiddos vibe (listeners also bought Hawk Nelson, Skillet, Relient K blah blah blah)

too bad FF5 will always be stuck in the Christian Music section T_T

Second off, I hope you enjoy the new DTTT mix of LMFAO's "la la la" (<3 u James)

Q: What Does Nashville Electro Sound Like? A: MAVS

Some people are saying "Nashville is the new L.A" which....I don't think so. Those people must never have been to L.A. The only similarities I can find are that both cities require a lot of driving to get to wherever you're going.

A modestly growing collection of players are blossoming here in cashville as far as electronic music. Matt Pusti is one of them, under the name "Make Up and Vanity Set"

He recently sent over some remixes which I'm proud to unveil here on NN.

Listeners will find the sounds to be similar to datA or CFCF.

Chateau Marmont - "Beagle"

While stalking twitter conversations between two favorite blogs, I heard Faisal (OHHCRAPP) tell Andrew (StoneyRoads) that "Chateau Marmont are the shit, they are sound engineers, they worked on countless top albums, we just dunno- i hope they rls album"

creeper = me (i know)

But that sparked my curiosity. I wonder who they engineer? As far as an album goes, the closest thing we have is their newest single, "Beagle" which drops with Kitsune 7

*forget all that*

In theory I should post Chateau Marmont but in all honesty that track is just decent *pretty great*. Prins Thomas is where it's at. Having Just remixed Junior Boys, its only natural that he work on James Yuill's latest single (jk everyone, I don't know anything about "James Yuill") That aside, here's my favorite track off Kitsune 7:

Chew Fu does the Diddy Bop + MMMatthias tackles Moderat

Rapidly gaining mad xp and leveling up (via moon stones and rare candies) NN is getting attention of some of my favorite upcoming remixers including Chew Fu and MMMatthias!

Chew Fu seems to be going the pop goes dirty route, in which he makes kids feel ok about listening to and keeping up to date with the latest pop trends by way of dirty dirty remixes. Joking aside, these mixes are top notch. I would drop any of these during a set and I do advise you to help Chew Fu out by RT his diddy remix to @IAMDIDDY.

$ Black Eyed Peas - Boom Boom Pow (Chew Fu)
$ Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun (Chew Fu)
$ Britney Spears - If U Seek Amy (Chew Fu)
$ Ciara - Love, Sex & Magic (Chew Fu)
$ P.Diddy - (Tweet This @IAMDIDDY) Diddy Bop (Chew Fu)

MMMatthias has been on the map for some time now, starting with his success of his remix of "The Youth" (cleverly stearing clear of the MGMT singles in order to stand out). His style is unique in the way that instead of requiring an acapella, he hi-jacks the song and manipulates it by supurb cut ups and then adds a sick beat.

His latest remix has less cut ups, and more climbing building euphoria. Apparat + Modeselektor + MMMatthias is a pretty great thing.

The Tables Have Turned...

We've had our fill of Passion Pit remixes (More to come I'm sure). But what happens when the remixed start to remix?

Is Passion Pit the new MGMT (in which you will begin to hate them after overexposure of remix upon remix)?

Here's their rework of Dan Black's latest single, "Symphonies". The track is definitely one to get excited about, but will we be listening to this two weeks from now? We'll see...

Danger Mouse & Sparklehorse

"Dark Night of the Soul (Spanish: La noche oscura del alma) is a treatise written by Spanish poet and Roman Catholic mystic Saint John of the Cross. It has become an expression used to describe a phase in a person's spiritual life, a metaphor for a certain loneliness and desolation. It is referenced by spiritual traditions throughout the world."

It also happens to be the new collaboration between Danger Mouse & Sparklehorse.

It also happens to be really really good. Blending a smart collection of talent and changing up the pace from chilled out, to rocked out to spaced out, "Dark Night of the Soul" will be heavy on my rotation.

Single: Audacity Of Huge – 03 August 2009
New Album: Temporary Pleasure – 17 August 2009

Simian Mobile Disco release a brand-new album 'Temporary Pleasure' through Wichita Recordings on 17 August 2009.

The album will be preceded by the single ‘Audacity Of Huge’ on 03 August 2009. 'Audacity Of Huge' features vocals from Chris Keating from the critically acclaimed Yeasayer.

'Temporary Pleasure' was recorded at the bands studio in east London throughout 2008 and 2009, when the band weren’t busy touring their live show, DJing and producing. As well as representing the best of UK dance music the record contains some staggering pop anthems, featuring vocal contributions from the likes of The Gossip’s Beth Ditto and Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor. The album will be available on LP, CD and deluxe limited edition CD.

Track listing is as follows:

1) Cream Dream (featuring Gruff Rhys)
2) Audacity of Huge (featuring Chris Keating)
3) 10000 Horses Can't Be Wrong
4) Cruel Intentions (featuring Beth Ditto)
5) Off The Map (featuring Jamie Lidell)
6) Synthesise
7) Bad Blood (featuring Alexis Taylor)
8) Turn Up The Dial (featuring Young Fathers)
9) Ambulance
10) Pinball (featuring Telepathe)

Following the stunning videos she made for 'Synthesise' (now over 100000 Youtube viewings) and '10000 Horses Can't Be Wrong' Kate Moross (http://www.katemoross.com) will be designing all the artwork for the album and singles, as well as making the video for 'Audacity Of Huge'.

'Temporary Pleasure' is the follow up to the bands 2007 debut 'Attack Decay Sustain Release'. Simian Mobile Disco continues to be in huge demand as remixers, having remixed everyone from Armand Van Helden to Bjork via Muse and Klaxons.

Simian Mobile Disco have been confirmed for T in The Park and Lovebox festivals this summer and will be Djing at the following parties.

Autokratz - Always More (Yuksek Remix)

"Take my hand you can break my heart tonight"

sounds a little dashboardy to me, but wrapped around these lyrics you will find the driving synth notes and cold cut beats familiarized by now prevalent producer/remixer Yuksek.

I'm not so sure as to the lasting effect of this track, but it does serve as a nice teaser for the new release of Kitsune 7.  (release date June 7th)

New Starfucker - "Biggie Smalls"

Buffet Libre junkies may know Starfucker from their much loved Cindy Lauper cover (everyone loves it when genre boundaries are completely broken down and boys sing songs written for girls ONLY)

The "Jupiter" Ep can hardly be called an ep at all sporting 8 tracks (that's the standard for most full length indie albums these days)

01. Medicine
02. Boy Toy
03. Dance Face 2000
04. Bed-Stuy
05. Biggie Smalls
06. Girls Just Want To Have Fun
07. Jupiter
08. Rawnald Gregory Erickson The Second (Strategy Remix)

I absolutely love love love track number 5.

New Cool Kids "Champions"

Some new tracks dropped over at Fools Gold, which I initially visited to investigate after reading one of A-Trak's tweets.

Twitter quote: "A-TRAK + ARMAND VAN HELDEN = DUCK SAUCE. Come on yall, haven't you figured it out by now? Fool's Gold runs this."

The promise of a new A-Trak remix is a wonderful thing. While you wait for that, you can check out one of the two singles released in preparation for the "Gone Fishing" mixtape.

Burial + Four Tet - "Moth"

Here's a perfect mothers day track.

Four Tet and Burial have teamed up (I love four tet, I've never liked Burial; no matter how many times itunes tried to tell me that he is important).

The track is...

Pretty much sounds like music people get high to at an after-after party. You will probably hear this on college radio stations or at a 24hr coffee shop.
